Garden Club

"The one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it.  He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown." MT 13:23

The garden committee was started to help supplement St. Peter's monthly Outreach Meal with fresh produce and to help decrease the cost associated with the meal by starting a "community garden".

The community garden was also made available for St. Peter's parishioners to utilize the beautiful grounds to grow their own individual gardens.

It is the garden committee's goal that the garden will be financially self-sustaining through donations of money, supplies, labor and provide fresh produce for our community.

According to the USDA government, fruit and vegetable consumption is an important component of a balanced diet consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and the Food Guide Pyramid.  The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nurtition Service (FNS) promote the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables.  To learn more about the FNS and USDA's dietary recommendations please visit their website at www.fns.usda.gov/oane.  The community garden is being used to grow nutritious vegetables for the outreach meal to be incorporated into dishes for the meal, make fresh vegetables available for outreach meal participants, and parishioners.

The people helping cultivate the community garden are the garden committee members and local boy & girl scout troops.  We welcome any fellow parishioners who would like to get involved.  By working the garden and providing nutritious vegetables we are feeding both our minds and bodies.

Saint Phocas the Gardener is the committee's chosen saint because he was an innkeeper, gardener, and used surplus crops to feed the poor.
